Meet the Team: Emily Pate
HI, EMILY!
Emily graduated this last spring, 2022, from Miami University in Ohio with a degree in architecture.
What is your professional background?
My first job was at a pet store in the west metro. After working nearly two and a half years in retail, I jumped into the design industry as an intern at an interior design firm. The retail and interior design experience both greatly shaped how I design — that even, or maybe especially as a big-picture thinker, attention to detail is equally important. Now I’m excited to apply my knowledge from school, and experiences from retail and interior design to my architectural career.
What inspired you to work in architecture?
I have always had a passion for architecture, I used to build houses out of paper for fun as a young kid and used SketchUp in my spare time in middle school to create spaces that were fascinating. Today, I want to explore how we, as designers, can influence our communities through space and the built environment. As architects and designers, we have the ability and responsibility to do what is best for those around us, with the possibility of reshaping our society to create a positive impact.
What do you look forward to most at RoehrSchmitt Architecture?
I look forward to working with a great team who are passionate about what they do and getting the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects located in the beautiful Minneapolis area.
How do you hope to make an impact on your firm?
As a recent graduate, I hope to use my knowledge in landscape, culture, and philosophy to bring a new perspective to the table. Architecture is not solely about the design of buildings, it blurs the lines between tangible and intangible spaces, influencing not only the physical boundaries of the building but the atmosphere of the community and people who interact with it.
Favorite tool of the trade?
I absolutely adore my fat pencil, a great tool for messy sketching and getting your ideas out of your head and onto the paper.
What would your perfect day look like?
My perfect day would start with spending the morning at the barn with my horse, an afternoon out on the lake, and an evening hanging out with my close friends.
Coffee or tea?
I love coffee — especially since I’ve been experimenting with different coffee bean blends with my espresso machine, but I grew up in an American-English household, so I always have time for a good cup of tea.
What is one word you would use to describe your team? Explain why.
Authentic - they are genuine people and have enthusiastically welcomed me to the RSA team. I admire their drive and collaborative attitude toward our shared fascination with architecture.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
During my years of horse showing, my trainer would always tell me “It’s not about the ribbon, it’s about the ride” meaning no matter how I placed, the journey and perseverance it took me to get there is what mattered the most, which is applicable to all aspects of life.
