A unique firm keeping it real.

Michael Roehr and Chris Schmitt have been working together in one way or another for decades, ever since they met on the first day of architecture school. They founded RoehrSchmitt Architecture more than 17 years ago – their organic partnership nourished by a shared entrepreneurial spirit and an idealistic pragmatism, not to mention a deep friendship buoyed by an irreverent sense of humor.

RoehrSchmitt was founded on the principle that design is a team sport, and the belief that the best work arises from the healthiest workplace – that an enlightened, supportive, and balanced studio environment would provide the optimal conditions for inspired work. They weren’t wrong.

Today, the practice is thriving and growing, with a dynamic team of invested architects and designers generating an impressive portfolio of adventurous work that exemplifies RoehrSchmitt’s attitude — leading with clarity and optimism, and a bit of their signature swagger.

RoehrSchmitt is a unique firm keeping it real.

Michael Roehr is the firm’s design lead, working to establish a strong conceptual foundation upon which the team can develop projects with clarity and purpose. He excels at fostering constructive dialogue among all project stakeholders.

He came to design by way of philosophy, seeking a vocation which allowed him to take conceptual thinking beyond theory and into constructive engagement with the world. Now with 30 years of experience, Michael practices design as a collaborative exercise — a rich conversation — leveraging everyone’s shared understanding of the work at hand. When he’s not in the office, he’s either cooking something fantastic or making music.

Chris is involved in his community and the profession in a greater capacity as a member of the AIA Minnesota Board of Directors as a AIA Minneapolis Director.

A thoughtful and clarity-driven architect with 11 years of experience, Kaitlyn balances the technical side of building design with warmth and an empathetic touch. Her approach to project management is organized and analytical, and she has years of expertise in leading large teams to success on complex projects. Her architectural education was supplemented with a minor in sustainability studies, which she continues to expand upon to the benefit of the projects she works on, and the people she works with.

With a personal interest in maximizing the functionality of all spaces, Kaitlyn spends her time outside of the office strategizing her next home improvement project for her small Dutch Colonial 120-year old home. In between scheming up designs, she’s either embracing all of the Minnesota seasons in the great outdoors — with her family and dog in tow — or trying her hand at a new recipe.
