Wassermann Lake Preserve Park Shelter

Victoria, MN
Public

Wassermann Lake Preserve is a 10-acre preserve on the western shores of Wassermann Lake.

RoehrSchmitt worked with Aune Fernandez Landscape Architects (AFLA), the city of Victoria, and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District to design the public shelter for the ten-acre Wassermann Lake Preserve in Victoria, Minnesota.

The small structure provides restrooms and a maintenance bay that anchors a sweeping canopy overlooking Wassermann Lake. Set in a rolling oak savanna, AFLA's design provides for playgrounds, small performance spaces, and boardwalks through marshlands adjacent to the lake.

The shelter uses a simple palette of steel, masonry and naturally finished black locust and cedar to create a dramatic point of arrival and orientation for the preserve.

At the center of growth in the City of Victoria, Wassermann Lake Preserve provides a dual benefit to the city’s residents by both increasing public access and recreation opportunities as well as substantially improving lake water quality through a number of mitigation strategies included in the design.
