A recent client approached us with a desire for a new beach property in Michigan City, Indiana. With the site wedged in between two historic houses, we wanted to create a unique place that offered privacy and accommodation for the entire family, while generously offering great views of Lake Michigan and creating fantastic gathering spots around the home. The lower levels offer secluded bedrooms and entertainment spaces, while the main floors allow for natural daylighting, unobstructed views, and fantastic living areas.

Like all professionals, we take pride in honoring others who share our passion for the conversations we aspire to have. While we certainly enjoy a finely crafted brew here at RoehrSchmitt, we felt the individual brewers that were profiled in this video share a similar mentality for engaging an established industry with individuality, energy, and a passion for breaking the mold of how things are routinely done. Take a moment to watch this video. Cheers!

Recently, we’ve been diving into an exploration of Urban grocery stores. Hidden beneath much of the transportation infrastructure and resources locally available downtown, there are still voids, or “food deserts” where residents do not have local access to a grocery store. These gaps can lead to various negative effects on neighborhoods, from increased traffic congestion to health issues for the people living in these areas. Identifying these deserts, and finding a resourceful and effective solution can be an exciting and challenging process. Our recent discussions with city officials and developers have yielded some interesting results. We’ll be sure to keep you all in the loop on our progress. Stay tuned.

Our addition to the Chua Phat Ahn Temple in Roseville has been under construction for a few months now. While we’re excited to see the final product, the interior and exterior form has begun to take shape. Take a look at the progress Meritus Construction has made so far, and we love to hear your feedback

UPDATE We’ve added some more photos of the altar space. The natural daylight is really looking great. Great job to Peter and his team at Meritus Construction

A recently completed remodeling project of ours was featured in our client’s blog. Cathy did a great job documenting before and after shots of the project – something we always say we’re going to do, but…don’t. It’s a relatively modest project, but it packs a punch. And Cathy’s commentary really gets to the heart of how significantly a simple makeover can positively impact the daily life of family. Thanks Cathy!

Artesia Public Library Schematic Design - August 2011

Artesia New Mexico’s current Library building is approximately 60 years old, undersized and at the end of its life cycle. The citizens of Artesia have undertaken the challenging and ambitious task of building a new Artesia Central Library with the goal of serving their community well into the future. Their hopes for this new facility are that it uniquely represents the pride and optimism that is so common among citizens of this Southeastern New Mexico community. Goals of the project include:

- Create a Library that is a unique reflection of the City of Artesia and its citizens.

- Provide a building that effectively serves the citizens of Artesia through 2030 and beyond by employing strategies of flexibility with an eye towards growth.

- Create a Library with an intentional relationship to Main Street Artesia.

- Create a building that facilitates excellent service and access to information for all different ages and groups.

- Create a building that provides efficient, safe and comfortable staff spaces.

- Provide a high performance building that conserves resources and allows the Library institution to be an excellent steward of the community’s resources.

This post by Stefan Boublil extends a conversation we have around here about the limits – or the limitlessness – of design. As a way of thinking and working it only makes sense that you would extend this attitude toward everything you do. We talk about “designing the business” and treating it as an integrated extension of designing our lives. The essence of design is getting the elements of some medium clearly out in front of you, then bringing those elements into a speculative dialogue.

There’s a research phase in which you identify and articulate those elements, a phase of triage and bracketing in which those elements are sorted and ranked in a preliminary hierarchy relative to a given objective, and then the play begins or continues. Elements are brought together like a bunch of puzzle pieces with no predetermined way of going together, out of which emerges a variety of configurations that provisionally become the most fruitful and potentially generative of more movement toward ever greater resolution. Or ever greater generative capacity.

The risk is that you may discover something along the way that obligates you to change your life. But that’s also the hope…

…rinse and repeat.
